the holiday so far
Dec. 24th, 2001 11:15 pmYesterday D. and I spent the evening with friends for food, Invader Zim (DOOMDOOM DOOM DOOM!!) and gift exchange. My friends always come up with the coolest stuff that I've never heard of before. Its was just a great, relaxed evening; the kind I've needed lately and that never seems to happen for me during the Big Holiday Season. They help keep me sane :)
The maids woke us at 9(!) and did the best job I think they've ever done. I asked them to vacuum the basement this go, something I ask them to do every few months. It doesn't last long because I get fabric fuzz and thread everywhere, but it looks good now. And not having to clean is a nice gift, even if its one we gave ourselves.
We also took the time to assemble the "Meow-Chi" robo-cat. It is terrifically cute and the real cats are aghast - they aren't afraid but don't know WHAT to think.
We also finally went out to see Lord of the Rings today - a movie epic that is actually worthy of the big music, big screen, big promotion, etc. I was impressed, though I have never read the books (tried twice, they are a hard read. Listened to the radio show, but never got really sucked in the way hardcore Tolkien fans are). From my perspective, all the actors seemed perfectly cast for the roles they were playing, the cinematography and art direction were spectacular and clearly planned to the nth detail, and I think now the entire world is totally sold on New Zealand. D. was also suitably impressed and he HAS read the books.
Managed to hit G Street just before they closed and got red silk thread so I could continue sewing the boning channels on the corset. I completed that and spent a chill evening starting to actually bone the thing. Note: cable ties make excellent and cheap substitutes for steel boning - a couple of ties in each channel and you're good. It is more time consuming because each tie must be cut/ends sanded down to fit but I am liking the results.
So far no major holiday anxiety - I had a twinge earlier but I think it may have just been a kind of "cabin fever"; I've been mostly convalescing for the past 3 days. Trip to grocery/G Street fixed that.
If it hits me tomorrow I may go out and just DRIVE - one of the few days of the year when streets should be fairly empty. One of the things I always hated about the holidays when I was growing up was the claustrophobia - full house+nowhere to go+winter weather=extreme panicky cabin fever/lack of privacy crisis, and some part of me still wants to respond that way even though its only me, D., and the cats now.
Speaking of cats, time to hit the sheets with some Nyquil, books and cats.
