fashion news
Sep. 15th, 2004 08:55 pmI was amused to see a link at DCist for the first DC Fashion Week. I mean, I'm glad there's an outlet for local talent, but I just don't think of DC as a very fashion-forward sort of town - I love a good suit as much as the next person but must they always be so navy, sensible, and dull?
I've been hearing about the "new modesty" in the fall fashion shows, I picked up my first fashion magazine in about 2 years (can't buy anything, so why bother?) out of curiosity to see if this was actually so.
Sure enough - longer skirts, fewer bared midriffs, but this is the fall/winter fashion special after all :P Also I can bid 1990's minimalism a safe goodbye, as all the models wore tons of jewelry. Purple lipstick and green eyeshadows are "in" (oddly enough, they were two years ago as well) and luxe is also back in - I can't help but laugh at stories like "Can the It Bag Change Your Life?" ("How to score a cult bag....As soon as you see that bag on the runway, speed-dial your personal shopper" - because we all have one, right? :P)
The things I can get into - tweed, androgynous tailoring, longer, fuller skirts (AT LAST! I can wear stockings instead of tights again!), dangerous looking leather. Not so much - gobs of jewelry and high-heeled everything. Found in closet to recycle: pinstriped long coat I made 5 years ago - wound up too big then, yet fits perfectly now (yay for weight gain/lifting dumbells!), spectator loafers (badly in need of a polish).
In more fanciful fashion news, Sky Captain production stills and concept sketches are finally available. Attn.
tommdroid: much steam-punky "Metropolis"-y robots and machinery in the sketches. Also a group in the UK filmed a new version of War of the Worlds, getting the jump on Stephen Spielberg and promising even more shiny costumey goodness...
