Or back on the piste, in this case - A. finally felt well enough to fence! I was a bit rusty, but it was good to get out there again.

I don't think I'm going to end up fencing this fall :( The semester starts in 3 weeks and I cannot responsibly cough up the $78 tuition + $20 fee all at once. I'll keep with the historic (I can find $8/week a couple of times a month or so).

I AM going to try and host an Olympic fencing viewing party - I've finally got most of the footage on tape (clocks in at around 2 hours), so I want to have folks over for food/nitpicking. Should be fun :)

In non fencing news, [livejournal.com profile] geekchick point out that the National Book Festival is coming up in October - dig the list of attending authors! And to the best of my knowledge, it's free - go me!

I probably won't be around whenever you have this, but I'd love to see the footage sometime - it always seemed to be covered when I wasn't around a TV. I used to tape a lot of Olympics, but I have too many tapes I've never watched.

The one US girl who won gold that I saw in highlights - her reaction was so cool! :-)

You'll have to tell me about it - the women's gold is the one bout I missed! Damn Bravo for switching over to NBC live :P

Forgive any terminology errors, but when she scored whatever was her winning hit/mark/point/whatever, she whipped off her mask and was bouncing around very excitedly. She seemed almost in tears at the medal ceremony.

Her Chinese opponent did not look happy at all.

Yep, this seems par for the course for the gold medal winners :/ The men's sabre gold winner did something similar and his opponent was shocked, mute. It's amusing to watch, but truly crap sportsmanship :( Still, I can't say I'd be much better behaved if I won the gold at the Olympics!

If it ever becomes possible, you're welcome to stop by and view the vid :) I can't offer copying services - I've only got 1 vcr!

Oooh! I haven't seen any of the fencing at all. Perhaps you could bring said tape with you when you come in September and could give me a blow-by-blow commentary on a bit of it.

And I have one burning question: do you dress like your icon above when you fence?????? :-))

Be very happy to bring the tape, but be aware - I've never fenced modern sabre in my life!!

Re: the icon - nooo.. that would HUUURRT! Interesting note though - in 19th c. dueling sabre, fencing bare chested with no mask was de rigeur - it showed you weren't afraid of getting hurt.

Had there been more female duellists, I suggest that the popularity of the sport might have lasted into the modern age ;)
