fencing on the tee vee

Yeees! Finally got some Olympic fencing on Replay! This morning I watched Aldo Montano win men's saber gold, and I'm not sure which was more interesting: the fencing itself, the kick ass bleeding edge equipment (wireless scoring equipment and plastic visor masks), or Montano's antics after he won (the leap into his coach's arms will be sure to please sports slashers everywhere :P)!

Just what I wanted, a fencer with personality, and we can see their faces now, so hopefully there will be more demand for televised matches! (It also doesn't hurt that Montsano is young and pretty - the announcer said he's also a part time model :P).

Due to travel/illness/timing, I've not fenced in almost 3 weeks (!) Itching to pick up a blade now, in the worst (best?) way....

Updated 10:45 pm: Hah, I knew it!! Keeth Smart, one of the U.S. fencers, cites Star Wars as an inspiration to pick up the sport. I suspect this is also true of some of the Jedi wannabees who flail around aimlessly at my regular practice during the year (hell, it is partly true of myself, :P)

This is the CBC's Olympic broadcast schedule. If you use the sports schedule menu at the top of the grid, you can see the times of the coverage ... looks as if fencing is getting a respectable amount (just not in prime time :P )

(related follow-up: no luck finding the Sheba cover of "The Pyrates" online. I scanned my copy a few years ago for Henbone, but if I still have the file, it's on my one'n'only zip disk [home computer has no zip drive, of course])

Wow, y'all are getting a lot of coverage! [envy]! Yeah, it IS in the middle of the night, but that's what Replay/Tivo are for!! We gotta get some CBC down here...

I'll keep my fingers crossed that your library has the 1st printing of the Pan paperback edition ... that's the one with the Sheba cover (I've seen at least six different Pyrates covers ... the original British hardcover dustjacket with most of the characters on it is also very nice, although the Sheba on it is pretty stiff ... my copy's cover looks like a movie poster painted by Rembrandt after seeing his first copy of Playboy ***grin***)
