Oh no! Not more bass!
Jul. 17th, 2004 11:45 amTaking another musical trip down memory lane at Back to the Oldskool. The most familiar years were 1988-93; after that the titles start to look less familiar (serves me right for starting to date :P) Some highlights:
Notable by it's absence is Apotheosis' "O Fortuna", a remixed version of Orff's "Carmina Burana", but this is a UK site and maybe it just wasn't as popular there.
It's difficult for me to overemphasize the impact music had on me back then, so if you ever want to know what consumed my wakig hours during my late high school/early college years, listen to the above.
- Pacific State - 808 State: recieved as a 7" for Xmas 1989 from a childhood penpal. Quickly brought about my break with indie rock and earnest proto-raverness.
- Voodoo Ray - A Guy Called Gerald: a masterpiece of minimal house, sounds perfect on a dancefloor today.
- James Brown is Dead - L.A. Style: Anyone at Sunday nights at the Masquerade in Atlanta ca. 1992 remembers this track being played OVER AND OVER.. we loved it though, hoovering noise and all!
- Injected With A Poison - Praga Khan: "We don't need that anymore"... For a time, the fastest record I owned, at ~135 bpm, though I'm sure later releases topped that easily
- Trip II The Moon (part 1) - Acen: They of the chipmunk voices chattering away. Again, Acen were hardly the Bach of techno (I reserve this award for Orbital, the Orb, Aphex Twin, 808 State), but rather the way children of the 1970s still have fond memories of, say, Abba, no matter how shmaltzy they were, I have fond memories of my early 1990s cheezcore :P
