thoughts: cruises?
Jul. 10th, 2004 04:23 pmRan across a site for Goth Cruises in one of my communities. Interesting, I suppose, but isn't there a hazard of tanning? It reminded me of Geek Cruises, which surprisingly is still in business, given the economy (Note they do have a section on "Convincing the Boss").
My own thoughts: I don't really know. I've never been on a cruise but I have to be honest and say the idea has never really appealed to me. I suspect I'd feel rather trapped on a boat that I can't stop exactly when I want it to. I'm also not terribly keen on having to pack in ALL my "touristing" on the limited days of shore leave - I like to take my time, wander the streets, etc.
I've also never been a huge advocate of laying in the sun for a week - weekends at the beach are nice, but after a few days I want something other than sand/surf. A book, a museum, a trip to some historic site.
I think a cruise would have to have some really great "shore" locations to appeal to me. Going down the Nile and stopping at the Valley of the Kings, the Giza plateau, etc. would be cool. So would, say, a trip in the Caribbean stopping at all the famous pirate lairs (who cares about shopping?) Yeah, it always comes back to history for me.....
Is there such a creature as "History Cruises"?

Date: 2004-07-10 04:06 pm (UTC)I've never quite got the appeal of cruises either ... a bit like only being allowed out of your hotel at certain times. And I agree with you on the limited appeal of beach lying, etc. ... I wanna go to the museums!!!!!

Date: 2004-07-11 08:00 am (UTC)I agree - this would have to happen a ways off - money is very tight right now for us as well, and with Mikey in school, it's another $900 every three months on top of everything else!
Let's keep it in mind though - if not in 2005 the maybe 2006. Something to keep on the back burner.

Date: 2004-07-11 08:08 am (UTC)Hmm.. fashion cruises. Maybe a.. sci-fi cruise? Lexx Cruise?
But then, the idea of being trapped on a boat with a million mad sci-fiers... hmm, scary ;)
