Was going to write something witty and insightful about shoes, but I'm just too tired to bring it together. Long story short, I'm trying to wear my trendy pointy-toed retro-Goth shoes instead of my usual Hush Puppy loafers. Not as sensible, but certainly more swanky.

I've about given up on most of my "girly" clothes for most practical purposes; they are usually either too inconvenient or just too cold to wear (air-conditioned office + skirt - boots = more goosebumps than a chicken farm :P) Even my beloved makeup sits unused; there's very little point wasting nice lipstick on perpetually chapped lips.

It's getting to me though. Sometimes I want to dress nicely and I find I'm so far out of the loop I don't even really know how anymore. What undies and shoes go with what? I'm hardly a trend-whore but I like to look like I at least know what year it is!

On the rare occasions I do wear something feminine I suspect I surely look like John Cleese dressed like Little Red Riding Hood - all shoulders and knees and generally too far gone down the tomboy path to make it "work".

Which, I suppose, is not entirely bad - I see women click-clicking down the street in sundresses and heels and I always hope they have a sweater for inside and hope their feet don't hurt too much. Maybe it's with age I'm just less and less willing to suffer to be beautiful.

Update: Pointy toed shoes are wearable provided that the point extends past your toes, rather than squeezing them to a point. This extends the length of your foot, so tripping might be a problem until you get used to it. Pinched a little; can't tell whether it was residual pointiness or the fact that I've only worn them maybe twice :P

Love the way heels look; hate they way they feel. I haven't worn anything over 2" high out of the house since I don't know when!

Re: 30s non-housewife: I look at places like Purple Skirt (http://www.purpleskirt.com) or Nordstrom's T.B.D. department (http://store.nordstrom.com/category/cat_medium.asp?category=2376776~2378685~2378686&origin=wdlpdd) and attempt to find cheaper versions :P Unfortunately the current trends seem to be very pastel-y and frilly just now, so while trendy in a non-midriff-baring way, it's just too fluffy for me. I'm looking forward to fall and the (re) start of dark colors and hard edges :)

Good grief, woman! You are WAY too hard on yourself. You have a figure a lot of women would kill for and that I'm sure looks great in everything it wears! Sounds like you may be in a fashion rut - I'm there myself... I would like to take the entire contents of my closet out into the back yard, burn them, and start over, but for the life of me I can't even think of trying to reinvent myself, fashion-wise.

You are too kind :) Trust me though, things that accentuate my shoulders = linebacker time!

I'm not great at resolving my own Fashion Issues(TM), but I used to make-over other folks for a living. What have you got in mind for yourself, what do you want to try? Let's brainstorm!

LOL! What would I want to try first? Well.... money would be nice - it's always easier to reinvent one's self when one has the funds to do so. I dunno though, wouldn't even have to be drastic, just ::different:: than what I have now. So middle-aged and frumpy. Hey - you've seen it! I just am not the fashionable type. But I would like to change, honest.

Pardon my not replying until now - LJ has been bad about telling me when I have comments queued up. No donut for LJ :P

Money would DEFINITELY be nice, I hear ya :/ I wouldn't call you frumpy, I would say that you're very casual - jeans, tees, etc.

I do notice that you almost never wear black. I know I'm biased, but IMHO if you compare identical garments in black and in another color, the black one always looks more fashion forward/expensive/"dressed up".

I know you've been flirting with goth - maybe a black pair of jeans, black t shirt? They don't have to be aggressively "punk" (no studs/spikes, no decals reading "I eat the flesh of the living and I vote!" or other such bon mots), but would provide a nice clean canvas for anything else (jewelry, shoes) you want to try.

And you could wear them to work!

Aw.... I have to get rid of my "I eat the flesh" t-shirt? Crap.

Not necessarily, but I still think the "I [heart] Pirates" shirt would be more "you" ;)
