My LJ Mind Map (visual representation of who I correspond with most/least/etc.)

MindMap
Also for a lark took the quiz at Find Your Spot - the results are telling, I guess, especially as where I actually live falls near the bottom of recommended cities! My #1 "spot" is Honolulu, ironic since it was just this week I was talking to D. about how it must be hard to be out in the middle of nowhere like that :P I think I could appreciate some of the California sites though. Pity it only includes the U.S. though, because despite my sheltered life I'm sure I could learn to live in the right foreign city ;)
I do recognize the ease and value of staying in one place, and after helping
geekchick move yesterday, I am reminded of the stress and sheer inconvenience of having to pack up and move your small corner of the world, even if it's just a short distance - I've never done it, but moving across the country must be a unique form of hell :/
Still, sometimes I do wonder what it would be like to wander... Hmm..

Date: 2004-03-21 02:11 pm (UTC)Not that bad, really. We wanderers don't collect as much sh*t as you landfolk do, and consequently we have a lot less to move. If you want to travel, then stop collecting material possessions, right now. A new sofa? Don't need it -- put down a futon and some pillows. A house? Don't need it -- buy a condo. Everytime I look at buying some sh*t, I think -- do I really want to have to move that across the country? Heck, even the recliner I bought has been dibbed by my upstairs neighbor for when I move. The bookcases collapse down to nothing, the desk and the stereo unit were free and can be left behind, and the futon frame comes apart. The treadmill's a bitch, but at least it fits in the back of my CRV. The only thing that I can't kick are my books, but I did leave them in storage and I seem to be doing fine without them for the last 24 months. If they were stolen/burned/gone, I'd pout, but I'd live. :) Being mobile means I can take advantage of any/all the opportunities that come along in my life, and I think that's good. Life is too short to miss opportunities just because you don't want to move a sofa. :))

Date: 2004-03-21 07:15 pm (UTC)If I ever found myself moving a very long way from here I'd probably sell most of the furniture - a mattress is the same everywhere so most things would be easily replaced. We have easily broken-down bookcases (Ikea rules!) and as you mention above, anything not vitally necessary can be put in storage. The big sticking point would be the cats - these cannot be left behind, sold, or put in storage, so we'd have to sort out a way of getting them across the country without undue stress on their part or undue blood loss on ours :/
