Because there is so much more to fashion than tailored suits and sexy heels:

Now THIS is more imaginative than the stuff used for results on that quiz! I've been going through my Aussie magazines, trying to find a Website that actually shows some of the entries in their wool fashion competitions for you; the Australians are big on Internet fabric shopping, but seem to be horribly shy about posting piccies of the fabulous results :-( But have found a gallery of the 2003 Wool Fashion Competition ... will post others as I find them.

I like the wool competitors, especially some of the menswear. Talk about having difficulty finding something original, menswear has a much harder time of it!

Speaking of wool: is it just me or do you have to practically know someone to find natural-fiber clothing at reasonable prices? All the more reason to make one's own..

On the flip side, a man who finds a design that is pleasing and flattering is less likely to discover it vanished from all the stores and replaced by something completely alien within the month. :p

Wool is dirt-cheap in Australia and New Zealand, which is why absolutely everything is made out of it. The garments in the gallery I linked to are quite bland compared to some of the stuff I see in Australian Stitches ... there are multiple design competitions there each year and most of the entries are breathtaking. Right now I'm looking at a 2-page spread for Amanda Starr accessories ... a bright and cheery breath of spring colours (these magazines are usually months out of date by the time they get here, but I don't care ... they're worth it). And then there's Affluence Online ;-)

As for having to know people ... I was addicted to Quebec-based chain of clothing stores called "Au Coton" (being French, the designers assumed that women were shaped like women and I could wear MEDIUM sizes!!!!!) ... reasonably priced, good quality, and instead of having a zillion different garments, they would manufacture, at most, a dozen styles each of tops and bottoms, but a massive spectrum of colour choices (all the clothing was manufactured in white cotton and then batch dyed so that woven fabric pants would match knit tops would match stretch leggings exactly).

Sadly, the company and their classic styles (which included t-shirts lifetime warranteed never to have their neck openings stretch out of shape) no longer exist ... last year they finally succumbed to years of being undercut by department store cheapies. So even more sewing for me ... as my favourites get tattered, I'll be using them to make patterns for replacements. Likely only a matter of time before Cotton Ginny disappears as well (unfortunately their clothes, while also of high quality and reasonable prices, have usually been too pastel/dull or froufrou for my tastes, so I've never adopted them as a substitute for my beloved Au Coton). I dislike the feel of most synthetics against my skin, so that cancels out many of the remaining clothing stores.

Guess we'll both have to keep on sewing, dammit!!!! ;-)
