Who is your inner Coupling character?
brought to you by Quizilla

Seriously, if you don't already watch the show, you should. The UK version - I don't know anything about the US version, which leads me to believe it's not worth making a quiz over :P

I saw the first US one and it was horrible. It used the same script as the first UK one, and it was like they had sucked all the life out of it. And Jeff wasn't scary/strange/weird enough.

The US version sucked massively. I hardly made it through the first episode. Someone on the [livejournal.com profile] coupling went to tapings of later episodes and said they were funny -- I have a hard time believing it considering the acting was so flat, the script was unfunny (a poorly rewritten/edited version of the first UK episode) and no one was likeable. Jeff came across like a creepy pervert...not Jeff.

The US version was the British version with a few sentences changed. I couldn't believe how they could take something that was so funny and make it so absolutely unfunny without even changing the script.

This is the sort of review I seem to be hearing from everyone! I wonder why NBC (or whoever) didn't just buy syndication rights to the UK version. The networks seem to be all about costcutting these days; they would have saved on set, talent, writers (well, it appears they already cost-cut there :P)

Kind of reminds me of the discussions a few years back about making an American version of Red Dwarf - the Cat was going to be a sexy woman, and they were going to make Lister less of a space bum. Thank doG it never came to fruition!

Yeah ... Terry Farrell (who later went on to play Dax on DS9) was to play the cat in the American version; so was Janet Leeves ("Frasier"'s Daphne) ... there were 2 different American pilot episodes made and I forget which actress was in which (will someday have to get my OWN copy of "The Man in the Rubber Mask" in which Robert "Kryten" Llewellyn gives a lot of details ... he was the only British cast member invited to be involved in the U.S. versions). I share in your thanks-giving that only the pure and beautiful Brit version survives :p

Two pilots, thankfully both crashed :> I'm sorry, I just think the formula for the UK Red Dwarf works so well, there is absolutely no way they could successfully alter it. Next you'll be telling me they were going to make Rimmer less of a smeghead!

Trying to recall what Mr. Llewellyn had to say about it all. Don't remember about the characters of Lister and Rimmer, but I do recall that he was rather disturbed when the actors playing the roles wanted him to quit goofing around in the wings between takes ... they wanted to get into their characters ... which was quite a change from Craig Charles killing off-camera time by trying his lighter on various parts of the sets to see how well they would burn.

Saw it, didn't care for it. Too bad, really, since I no longer get BBCAmerica and can't see the original, but these cookie cutter versions of existing shows almost never do well. What's the point of doing an 'American' version if you're just going to use the same scripts and storylines? They'd have been better off ripping off the concept and writing their own show, IMHO. :)

Do you get PBS? If so, check your local station's listings; the Spokane-based PBS station, which is available in Alberta, is carrying the Brit version of "Coupling" on Saturday nights, so some of the others may also be broadcasting it.
