Found an interview with the LOTR "Fighting Styles Designer" discussing how he designed the fighting styles for each of the races of Middle Earth. I gather from the article that a great deal of the swordplay was based on historical martial arts, and that the differences were inspired by Tolkein's descriptions of the differences between the different peoples' values, musical/artistic styles, etc. - Can anyone tell me how the fighting in the movies measures up to descriptions in the book? All I know is that I was impressed with this guy's results! (Tangential note - the rest of the Swordforum site is pretty cool as well, I just wish they'd update it!)

Also found very slick reproductions here and here. All are beautiful, but I prefer the Elven weapons for sheer aesthetics - just as well, because these are all too pretty to fight with (weep)! A tragic waste, but I guess that's why they made the miniaturized versions.

I don't think Tolkien really described the fighting styles, other than general mention of the clash of steel or the first shock of the Rohirim's charge. There were some general notes about each culture in Tolkien's world, noting that (for example) the orcs preferred rending weapons, as well as heavy bludgeoning weapons like clubs or hammers, while the Rohirim were pretty well described as light cavalry - - long spears and swords used on horseback. But I believe most of the cultures were well enough described that I imagine they could simply draw parallels to real world cultures and build from there. I can tell you the Eowyn's and Merry's fight with the Witch King was pretty much dead on. :)

I suspect the cooler elven weapons are based as much on the many illustrations of Tolkien's work as on the writings themselves. ;)

I imagine it was very hard for Jackson and his crew to work strictly from Tolkiens books and notes because so many others have illustrated/speculated over the years. I know, I know, I really should read the books, but after 3 unsuccessful tries I think I can safely say they aren't for me!
