playing with swords: epee
Dec. 18th, 2003 10:06 pmGot out to fence for the first time all month. A. and I went intending to fence foil against each other, if no one else, but the epeeists offered equipment, so we ended up fencing electrical epee all evening.
It's different. Everything is a target, and there's no right of way, so whoever hits first gets the point. Both fencers hit at the same time, both get points. Bouts are necessarily short :P We didn't do too badly, and I got to fence a former Olympian, and that's not something that happens everyday :)
I liked it, but I'm not going to give up my foil - with the lack of rules in epee I could see myself getting really sloppy if that's all I did.
Also discovered that when I tried to emulate the epee "on guard" stance, I couldn't get into the right headspace to concentrate correctly. Once I brought my back hand back to where it goes in foil, I was "back". Interesting.
It was good to get back out on the strip. I've been rather slack as far as exercise and rather enthusiastic when it comes to cocoa so I needed to get out there and move around.
