weekend in review

Finally saw "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen". It was a decent action film, but man, they could have done so much more with it if they'd just read the damn graphic novel! IMHO the design was well executed but poorly thought out; the set and costume directors had such an opportunity to do Victorian Tech and completely wimped out.
Also saw "The Italian Job" - kind of like Ocean's Eleven but with two heists. Mark Wahlberg is a surprisingly decent actor, and it's fun to see Edward Norton as a bad guy.
I managed to overcome some of my frustration and draft a pattern for some sleeves to go with my peasant kirtle - fairly simple really, if you read the directions! Of course, this means finding the $ for the fabric and for the necessary jagged pins to hold them on :/
Vionnet plan of attack: I think drafting even a half size pattern is going to take wider paper than I currently have. So, I'm going to call up the local newspaper to see if they have any roll ends they're willing to get rid of/sell cheap. Then in the next couple of weekends I'll roll this out on the freshly-mopped floor and draft, using my front neck-to-waist measurement as a starting point.
The pattern is mostly straight perpendicular lines with a curved hem, so in theory at least, this should not be too difficult. It's the scale involved that could present problems.
I also went to the local community college and got a non-student card there - I can only check things out for 2 weeks, but simply having access to it is enough. I forgot how college libraries are different from public libraries - a larger, older collection, academic books and journals, and total, utter silence :) I was hoping they'd have some of the Museum of London's Medieval Finds from Excavations in London, c.1150-c.1450 series - no such luck, but I saw a few art history books (including some on historic uniforms) that I'm keeping in mind.
The weather is cooling pleasantly, and there are lots of geese around - fall is here and I'm not too upset about it. The cooler weather and shortening days are making me a little sluggish and I'm fighting it - I'm feeling good and am not ready to hibernate!
I read some more - it's easier not to speed-read when one is not jacked up on java; I've successfully lowered my intake and it is having a good effect :) Silly me though - waited a week for the (public) library to get In the Garden of Iden for me, and D. sees the cover and advises me that it's been sitting in the downstairs bookshelf for several years :P At any rate, it's a fun read, with un-queasy romance and good characterizations. Besides, time travel + Tudor can't all be bad :)

Date: 2003-09-29 04:13 pm (UTC)I haven't done quite the same, although C. had a moment a while ago where he pulled something off the CD shelf and exclaimed "I didn't know they had a third album!" I pointed out that the CD was his, as I didn't own any of this band's stuff. I think a licensed copy of Readerware is in our near future. ;)
