Had a brainwave - instead of struggling to save up for $17/yd silk while hoping they'll still have it in stock, why not just order the dye and silk from Dharma Trading?

$4.50 (dye) + ~$11 for 2 yds silk = 15.50. Ok, not much less, but I'd get exactly the color I want have some silk left over. Besides, I could always go for the habotai and save even more (though I am very, very tempted to splurge on the sandwashed charmeuse (!!! feels SO good!)

Note to self re: swanky silks: Thai Silks has unusual goodies like silk fleece and silk/linen blends. The silk/wool is actually better priced than most wool I've found, but nothing there is as economical as Dharma Trading. I will set this aside for later though ;)

So what are you going to do with the silk?

I'm making a pair of Regency (1800)-style stays to go under a dress I'm making as part of a group competition entry at next year's Costume Con (my original [livejournal.com profile] dressdiaries post here (http://www.livejournal.com/community/dressdiaries/2003/06/07/)). I finished the lining and interlining months ago, but funds have been prevending me from completing it. This might be an economical solution :)

Well, our competitive entry is no great secret - me and a group of other costumers are going to do variations on a common theme of hot pink with rhinestones. I'm doing Regency (1800), someone else is doing Elizabethan (1500s), medieval, ancient Egyptian, Victorian, etc. We're all using the same fabric that one of us found at $1/yard, and we're going to get on stage and lip-synch to "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" (No one has volunteered to do the 1950s Marilyn dress from the movie - yet?)

I'll post pictures to my Yahoo photo album as I get things completed and photographed. It will take a while before all pieces are done though.

Thank you for your interest - I'm flattered!

Once you've bought and dyed a dozen or so batches of silk, the savings will mount up ;-)

BTW, love the costume in your LJ piccie ... got any full-length photos?

Glad you like it! it was my first historical, made winter of 2001-2002 :)

There are some full length pictures at my Yahoo photo album (http://photos.yahoo.com/anotherthurman/) - go to the "Costume Projects" folder and they should be the first thing in the "Historic Costumes" subfolder. My face is blurred for privacy reasons but the rest should be pretty clear.
