The weather cooled off and it stopped raining! Just gorgeous outside; I was able to talk D. into taking a short walk before dinner yesterday. The nights are filled with chirping crickets, the days with the screech of cicadias - I just love it!
I also went on a small book binge at the library (small = only 4 books). I even talked D. into going with me, and he signed up for a library card and checked out some of his own (it's my new project, getting him out of the house occasionally. If he's got to hang out somewhere, the library is a better place than most!)
I picked up two fiction:
and two non-fiction:
semmie17 - I looked for all the books on feminist theory that you recommended. Only one was in the system, but not at my location (will be using inter-library loan). It seems my public libraries don't really cater to academic titles, and they weren't cheap even at Half.com :(
Speaking of cheap - I'm watching my finances carefully and am hoping I'll have enough left over after bills/rent this month to finally get the stay outer fabric and lacing so I can finish up the Regency stays and make a start on the dress muslin.
It frustrates me immensely that what is left over from this paycheck must cover food for the rest of the month (my next paycheck is entirely eaten by rent). D. is looking for work, but in this economy who knows how long it might take? We are getting by, but it does mean watching every penny - literally :(
Did a bit of writing, but it's nothing I'm outrageously impressed with. My writing lists are gearing back up after the summer break, and it seems as if I don't rush my characters will be aged, dead and buried before I get to them! Still, I need to make more time and take more care, because I can do better than I have been.
I did take some exercise (stationary bike, walking, housework) and indulged in quick Brunswick stew - very filling!
From my mom, who discovered it some years ago I know not where:
Ingredients:
1 can pork barbecue
1 can beef barbecue
1 16 oz. can creamed corn
1 16 oz. can diced tomatoes
1 6 oz. can white chicken
1/2 cup barbecue sauce (I prefer "smoked" flavor)
Directions:
Put all ingredients in a covered pot. Bring to a boil, and then simmer for an hour, stirring occasionally.
Alternately, you can put all ingredients in a crock pot and cook 4 hours on high or 8 hours on low.
I also went in search of a decent moisturizer for the winter. My favorite (zero fragrance!) is currently out of reach so I'm going to try the only thing on the Cosmetic Center shelf that didn't 1) have tons of mineral oil and petroleum 2) list "fragrance" anything other than dead last on the ingredient list. I only found 2, and picked one by L'Oreal that still wants desperately to smell of flowers. Combination skin sucks!

I picked up two fiction:
- Lamb, as recommended by
geekchick - To Ruin A Queen, a historical mystery that takes place in Elizabeth I's court - have read others in this series before; good light reading
and two non-fiction:
- Reefer Madness - quite good so far, but I find myself again falling into the habit of reading things I'm likely to agree with
- Bloody Mary's Martyrs - decent overview of the subject but poorly footnoted and makes some extraordinary claims (when an author writes that Thomas More was a "pervert" who was whipped by his own daughter, I think it's fair to expect documentation :P)
