High end ecclesiastical clothing - Interesting aesthetically but not sure what I think of this. I'm aware that the Catholic and Orthodox Churches have a long history of beautifully designed vestements designed to inspire/awe the laity and celebrate the glory of God, I'm not sure that in this day and age any nun really needs to be spending 170 Euros (around $195USD) for basic habit (large PDF). And fashion nrrd that I am, it seems a bit.. wrong, to market religious wear like it's high fashion. Aren't the clergy supposed to be above such..well.. indulgence?

Much of the re-vamping of religious wear recently is an attempt to make a life in the clergy more attractive and "modern" to candidates.

It's hard enough to get women to choose a life of service, much less if they have to look frumpy as a result.

Yabbut, I always assumed (incorrectly?) that love of Prada would be incompatible with suitability to a spiritual life :P When I worked retail I did see a at least 1 nun in modern habit (I confess, I wonder what they were doing shopping in Nordstrom), and it looked serviceable, but not like she spent nearly $200 for skirt, shirt, and veil!

No, I can see your argument though. There's the additional factor of giving churches a more modern image to appeal to potential parishioners (sp?). Isn't church attendance supposed to be down in most industrialized nations?
