So, I went to Summer Nationals qualifiers today..

I didn't qualify. That didn't surprise me. What did, to my chagrin, was that my results were completely expected - apart from the odd touch for or against, I did about how I thought I'd do.

Which is disappointing, partly because I (as always) wanted to do better, but also just because it confirms the plateau I'm on: win a couple in pools, just enough to get me to DE, then strike out with 7-8 touches in the first DE.

Dull, dull.

Sometimes a plateau heralds a jump forward. I hope this is the case this time.

Or maybe I don't - doing better = more attention, and I HATE to be the focus of concentrated attention. I am not good at being "the star".

Hmm - might need to work on that as well.

I did see Watchmen opening weekend and posted initial impressions, but held off writing more until I'd re-read the novel.

I still think it was a good movie, with some shortcomings - most forgivable, some not.

spoilerage abounds )

Short version: I think that despite a couple of stumbles and one fairly poor casting decision, the movie mirrors the book about as closely as it can without being 9 hours long. I am curious to see any deleted footage and the Tales of the Black Freighter DVD, but I really hope this inspires more people to read the graphic novel - there's so much more there.
