I've known about this for awhile, but it's still kind of sad for me: Tower Records is closing their doors for good.

When I was a teenager in the Atlanta 'burbs, Tower stood out for me as a beacon of civilization in a wasteland of mainstream record stores; a chain that actually carried good music, including imports and actual vinyl. Not as elite or lived-in as my favorite local indies, but on the occasions I made it down to the Atlanta location their selection always managed to feed my need to hear Something I'd Never Heard Before.

My first Shamen album (En-Tact, UK version); hell, my first Lush album, procured on cassette (remember those?) were listened to in near raptures on my furious walks around the block with my ancient Walkman (remember those?). I was a fairly unhappy teenager, and music was one of the few things that buffered me from the world, so Tower was a temple of all that was exciting and fresh and sane-making.

And now it's going. And I suppose it's time, and was inevitable (to be fair, either the selection of my local Tower has gone downhill, or, more likely, I've not kept up enough to know what I'm looking for anymore), but at least it served it's purpose for me. Can't ask for much more I suppose.
