Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] vree! Hope it's a good one :)

In which our protagonist is heroically routed..with alarming repetition.. on the strip :P

I'm not sure which is more disturbing - that fencers half my age and size yet twice my speed routinely kick my ass, or that I'm old enough for there to be fencers half my age that are that have years of experience. Damn! To be fair, they've probably been competing from childhood and have the distint advantage of younger/faster reflexes.

Went to my coach's other club, the one where all the serious competitive fencers practice and get lessons. I seldom win but that's not always the point - unless you fence people better than you there's no hope of improving. And CCFC's fencers are very good - I consider myself lucky if I score one touch per 5 point bout against them. [Here I would insert some Chinese cursing for geekgirl effect, but it's too early and I'm too lazy to look it up.]

Deeply tired this morning but seem to have more energy overall lately - I know that sounds contradictory. Let's see if I can make sense of it today...

A Perfect Medium: Photography and the Occult - could be described as a history of photo manipulation and the interesting effects of double exposure, but so what - I love this sort of thing :) Besides, I don't think they're making any supernatural claims anyway - I notice that they include one of the Cottingley "fairy" photos, which have long been known to be hoaxes.

20 million year old spider found in amber - I don't care, it's still nasty!

Even nastier: fire ant colony floating in water - I swear, I thought the stories of fire ants massing together to ride out Katrina were urban legends until I saw the pictures! More info, especially on how to leave them alone :P

And, of course, it's Pandemic Flu Awareness Week. Note that FluWikie is interested in preparedness, not panic.

And hell, I'll give you one more, because of my interest in lay epidemiology: Aetiology, a blog about infectious disease (which appropriately has a 3-parter on pandemic flu). For some reason I'm having difficulty accessing it; if anyone can provide me with the URL for their RSS feed I'd much appreciate that :)

For future reference - I may have some Posts of Substance with genuine effort made at contemplation over the next few days due to an abundance of interesting news stories that I've run across. Be alert, but don't hold your breath - I doing my impression of the Great Procrastinator :P
