Went to the salon today to get my monthly trim. Yes, I have had very nearly the same haircut, with a few variations, for about 10 years now, give or take. What can I say? It works and I don't have to do a lot in the morning :P

The stylists like to experiment on each other and I'm usually delighted to see all of the new colors, cuts, arrangements that they come up with. And I still am, but a couple of exceptions....disturbed me.

First off, one girl had heavily sprayed her bangs into a version of a 1950's ducktail/pompadour - think Parker Posey in Blade III. Not dreadful, but it strikes me as a lot of work - I mean, who knows how much hair spray, curlers, and/or constant checks in the mirror it takes to maintain that? But, her choice.

The other... doG help me, it was a mullet. On a 20-something stylist in a trendy salon(!) And I'm not sure how it mutated, but IMHO it's just not cool. It was cool on Duran Duran in 1983 with blond streaks and Aquanet. Now - to me it just looks like a lot of work for very little payoff. I mean, wasn't this tried already?

Understand - I totally respect if someone has an outmoded haircut because they have greater, loftier interests in life than keeping up with fashion, but that the fashionistas themselves are bringing this back... well, I never [insert snooty society lady expression here] :P

In truth, I am reaching that age where what was once new is now old is now new again, and I find my fashion sense stuck rather firmly in the minimalist 1990s, when dressing up was a quick glob of hair gunge and a sweep of Chapstick. Growing up in the mid-late 1980s, it was an uphill battle to find simple clothing that wasn't marred by excessive prints, trims, or other clutter. The time-consuming hairstyles were a nightmare - so much so that I cut all my hair off at age 13. Why do all this again? It was so much work!

I'm rapidly losing touch with current trends and becoming an old fart. I still haven't decided whether this bothers me :P
