..and this guy is really independent.
Stephen Bassett is currently the only lobbyist in the Washington that lobbys for an end to UFO secrecy. He's decided to run a Congressional campaign based on this platform - from his campaign website:
This IS in my district, btw. If he gets enough signatures I'll have the opportunity to vote for him. The irony considering my skeptical interest in the whole subject of UFOs is just too rich!
I don't think he'll win, but I don't think he expects to. I think he just wants to get the whole subject of UFO secrecy out in the open.
Not sure what I think of this. Not sure whether to laugh or cry - laugh because I'm sure he realizes that this platform is kind of absurd (especially given the more pressing issues at hand - though his stance against UFO secrecy extends to a stance against excessive gov't secrecy in general - a good thing, IMHO), or cry because taking such an, er, controversial platform may undermine the credibility of other independent candidacies.
Read the site though, especially his keynote statement. It's fun. He was also interviewed on Coast to Coast AM earlier in the week if you want to hear what he has to say.
Though I have extraordinary misgivings about this, I do get the vibe from listening to him that he is completely sincere. I think the concept of a sincere politician is more novel to me than anything else!

"If sufficient qualified signatures are gathered by August 5, for the first time a candidate directly confronting the fact of an extraterrestrial presence and calling for disclosure will be on the ballot in a congressional election."
