Art Deco Expo
Jun. 9th, 2002 10:05 pmQuite interesting. Evidently this thing happens every year - wish I'd known about it sooner.
I enjoyed just looking at all of the old appliances and housewares - it's still amazing to me how the entire design aesthetic can be defined in a single old radio.
I also saw some items on sale by Russel Wright, the 1920s-40s designer of housewares whose work D. and I had seen at the Cooper Hewitt in NYC. It was interesting to see museum quality items for sale. No purchasing of course - something like that is way out of my range, and I'd be terrifed to use it for fear of breaking it!
I did end up picking up a comprehensive book on Art Deco design that I'd been meaning to get for years, and a navy 1940s lined wool suit that actually fits (!) and at a great price. The skirt is a bit tight in the waist, but that is to be expected given the highly reinforced undergarments usually worn in the 1940s. As it is, I will probably wear the jacket with some gray pants I already have and make some nice matching "Katharine Hepburn" style pants if I can find a pattern/the right shade of wool.
We went out for Korean food, which I had never had before - I feared that it would be all pickled vegetables, but happily this was NOT the case and I was pleasantly surprised. I managed to order mostly fried food though, so I am happily drinking gallons of water to relieve the thirst.
I finally finished the book about the 14th century - one hell of a dense read but I certainly know more than I did before. Going to start plowing through back issues of Fashion Theory that I set aside while reading this.
