Nov. 29th, 2002 04:55 pmLooking into the possibility of making a Regency outfit, so I watched "Emma" today, the first of I imagine what will be many instances of being Jane Austened to death if I decide to pursue this.
The clothing - great shapes and fabrics, but almost everything was white or light - did NO ONE wear dark colors during this time period? Or maybe it is just that the 2 female characters most often on the screen (Emma and her friend Miss Smith) are a blonde and a strawberry blonde, respectively, and they wear light colors better? The only character who wore darks often was Mrs. Elton, and I'm gathering that it might have been a theatrical device to play up her overbearing personality.
