a very long day
Nov. 5th, 2002 10:47 pmSpent the day at a seminar on the main campus - walking around carrying bags after lifting 11 1/4 lb. (notched up from 10) dumbells last night. My back hates me, and I deserve it.
Lots of playing in the cold and rain getting back from campus to my car, and then more cold and wet going to and from my last drawing class of the semester.
What I learned throughout the semester: when you hold the charcoal pencil like a paintbrush, you can actually tell the difference between medium, soft, and extra-soft leads (whereas, if you hold them like pencils, all weights of lead will smudge into the paper with equal distortion). Paper makes a huge difference (textured paper for charcoals makes it all come together nicely). Realization that despite its many merits, I don't like charcoal. Refreshed the basics of shading, volume/shape, and perspective. Finally, learned that I need to PRACTICE.
Shiny Thing of the Day: 100% silk cutout velvet. Gorgeous, but at $105/yd I'd never get it. Unless I was truly, madly in love with it and making a very tiny garment indeed. A pocket, say, or a handkerchief...
Watching the election returns (went to vote, somehow, between work and drawing) and so far so good. It looks like most results won't be in until morning.
I am so tired that I don't have time to look through the materials that Costume Con 2003 sent me about rules, competitions, etc. though the idea of another costume geekfest does set my exhausted heart all a-flutter (you're all coming to Costume College with me next year. Really).
