What started with a lucky Miyake find and deeply discounted Westwood boots is turning into some tentative designer collecting. I have searches set up for some of my favorite designers on Ebay, and so far I've found a Westwood top and Comme de Garcons blazer. I'm adhering to some limitations so I don't go crazy:

  • It has to be something I'll actually wear, and in my size - no chasing something the wrong size or potentially unflattering just to see how it's made.
  • Never full price because... just no. I can't afford such extravagance and besides, finding a bargain makes the pursuit more interesting.
  • I have limited closet space so for each item I get, one has to go. It doesn't have to be an identical item (get a skirt and, say, a pair of shoes goes) but it's certainly ideal if I'm replacing "ok" with "better" (the CDG long blazer replaces a pinstripe one that never fit properly).
  • It has to be representative of the designer's work. I refuse to shell out $$ for a t shirt with a logo.

So far this strategy is finding me ~3 pieces a year. Which is plenty.

The Westwood boots are very nice, I bet they would work both in urban settings and in a ren-faire kinda crowd.

Thank you - they really are surprisingly versatile! IMHO they go with jeans, skirts, and my pirate coat!

You have such restraint! You know my history with designer things...I have never been afraid to buy designer frocks! I simply can't imagine (designer or utility garb) having the willpower to force myself to throw something out when I brought in something new.

On the designer things though...now that I have daughters, assuming they end up with my physique, I can now say I have a reason for holding onto my things...something to pass on to the girls :)

Believe me - I don't always have the willpower for one in, one out! But I have to at least make the effort because of space constraints.

Nice! Which Westwood top did you snag? And you have remarkable restraint. :) I keep trying to stick to the "one in, one out" rule, but it never works as well as I hope.

I joke that my superpower is being able to find expensive designer shoes for either relatively or objectively cheap; it's not the most useful superpower in the world, but it is mine and I like it. :) Are you on The Outnet and Yoox's mailing lists? I am on them for the sale info, and it usually pays off. :) Bluefly also just sent out an email last weekend about an "everything's $29.97" clearance sale. (Prada for under $30? That's crazy talk!)

Westwood top = knit top that looks like deconstructed horizontal stripe "sailor" shirt - some of the stripes go downwards, also drawstrings on sleeves. Hard to explain...

Shoe bargain finding IS a superpower!!

You evil enabler you - I just registered with Yoox and Outnet, just 'cos.
