  • Eat more salad - met the zen master of all things leafy who gave me some ideas for making roughage tasty. Time to act on them.

  • Stretch daily, no matter how time consuming or painful - if I want to look and feel less stiff on the strip, I've gotta.

  • Be more generous - don't know how, or with what, but try.

  • Be less cynical - the hardest, as I've done a good job of building a crusty shell around myself to compensate for the "kick me" sign I wore for the first 20 years of my life. I'd like to figure out how to let it go when it's not warranted.

How I did on last year's: had regular smoothies through March and am not quite sure why I stopped (or why I didn't eat them like crazy during the August heat wave). Did expose myself to new music, partly through RA and best through NPR's All Songs Considered. Meditation....kinda didn't happen. Maybe I can combine this with stretching this year.

Making roughage tasty? EXPLAIN HOW. (Please :) I'm not a big fan of vegetables, especially raw, but need to change that.

tastier salads

Here's what I picked up:

Use something other than iceberg lettuce - butter lettuce, arugula, spinach etc. all have better flavor/texture than iceberg.

Use crunchy and sweet together for contrast and texture - like cranberries and shaved almonds, or sliced pears and walnuts (tangential - use fruit! This would never have occurred to me).

Avocados, but this is a personal bias.

Let some ingredients marinate in balsamic vinegar to room temp before adding to cold lettuce.

I like the marinate in balsamic vinegar idea. I don't think I'll ever develop a fondness for arugula, but butter lettuce and spinach are doable. Now to remember all these ideas...Thanks!

I'm seeing spinach pushed as one of the newly acclaimed "superfoods", up there with blueberries and tea. If you like it that might be a good place to start.

Juicing is a great way to get raw veg into your diet too. I just started doing more juicing and it's a nice contrast from epic chewing all the time!!

That last one is awesome. I love the way you put that. It's definitely something I need to do as well.

Don't know about you, but I LIKE my crusty shell - it's kept me safe all this time. But damn it's exhausting!

I had a really good crusty shell that I liked, then it morphed into a crusty form of entropy and is making me depressed. And yes, exhausted. Maybe we just both need a new crusty shell!! Haha.
