Or wasn't for us. Lots of wind and rain, but no power outages. I didn't even need to bake brownies!

I'm aware that there were/are power outages locally but I'm not seeing a real pattern - some friends lost it for a few hours, fencing club lost it this morning, but I didn't see anything during my evening grocery run (why was the cat litter sold out? Was everyone planning on being stuck inside and decided they might as well knock out this unpleasant task?).

Yes, the media hyped it, but so did seemingly every authority except the weather forecasters, who simply couldn't predict specifics until it was right on top of us. Frankly I think after Katrina county/state governments never, ever want to be caught unprepared again.

Glad you're okay!! The hurricane blew some new holes through Hatteras Island and several thousand people (I think) are cut off now - same as happened with hurricane Isabel. They'll have to rebuild the road if they can get the breach filled in.

How much rain did you end up getting?

Only a couple of inches (http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ridge2/RFC_Precip/), but that was over several hours. There weren't any downpours.

Looks like parts of NC, NY and So. VA got the worst of Irene. I saw pictures of flooded subway stations in NY. And those New Yorkers know how to prepare for a hurricane even less than we do!

A hurricane that did not even require baking of brownies? Pfft. That said I'm happy it was someting of a false alarm and that you are safe and in one piece. :-D

Better overprepared than unprepared I'd say. But then there is the danger of people relaxing too much and not bother with alarms if they have cried "Wolf!" one time too many. It's not easy to say what is right and/or wrong.
