Work on the pirate coat has commenced. I'm using the pink side for stability and hard-wearing pirate cred, and to counter the fabric's inclination to stretch and ravel I've flat lined the body and sleeve pieces with plain quiliting cotton.

I'm using a Simplicity pattern which means "simple", which means the pocket flaps don't conceal a real pocket. Insanity, I say, and wildly inconvenient - how many opportunities does one get to have a costume that has a practical feature?

So I'm making my own. Welt pockets, though they are a pain to make, don't have to be perfect in this case because the flap will cover them. They just need to be finished so they don't ravel out.

Pocket flap above, welt pocket basted in below, before I cut the opening. The flap has a curved edge but I thought it too unstable to risk mirroring it in the welted slit.

Time to get out the cutting board and Exacto knife. Wish me luck.
