Very interesting and good points made, especially about the lack of instruction/patterns for men. 'twill be fascinating to see if the boom in men knitting and crocheting, and the trends within that boom, spreads over to sewing as well. Primary trend being a rebellion against the scarcity of patterns for men and the fairly frequent declaration that the existing ones are a)ugly and b) uncomfortable, so male knitters are now designing what they want/like to wear and publishing their own patterns (and yes, there is the gay contingent, but a hefty percentage are straight and have discovered, along with the fun of creation and ending up with neat and unique wearables that they like, that, to quote many of them, guyknitting = "babemagnet" ***GRIN***)

I'm not as familiar with the knitting "scene" as you are, but I have heard rumors of knitting sports nights - guys bring their knitting and watch the game. I'm glad to hear that those who want and aren't finding patterns are making their own!

The stricture against fiber arts for men mystifies and intrigues me. I don't know many personally who would let that keep them from a crochet hook/sewing machine if they were so inclined, but evidently traditional male gender roles are really rigid and hard to get out of for a lot of guys.
