The U.S. healthcare system is finally getting an overhaul - yay!

There has been a last-minute anti-choice amendment added that will make it almost impossible for American women to get coverage for an abortion - boo :( Big boo.

Full disclosure - I don't have a personal dog in this fight because 1) I've got good insurance already, and 2) with my tubes tied I'm very unlikely to ever need an abortion. But I'm tired of the slaps in the face - a woman is sovereign over her own body, period. And if you're going to expand access to health care, you expand access to ALL of it, and don't use women's lives as a political football.

I could say more but others have likely written it up far more cogently than I ever could (like this). More healthcare for more people is a GOOD thing, don't get me wrong, but I'm extraordinarily disappointed and angry by the addition of Stupak-Pitts.

When politicians pull crap like this, it makes me donate. Since the bill in S.D. that was passed (but didn't get implemented because it was unconstitutional) to really limit abortion a few years ago, I've been joining women's groups and tossing money at organizations that fund things like contraception and abortion. First it was NOW, this past year planned parenthood and some organization that provides money for abortions for women who can't afford it. This year I'm probably going to add NARAL.

They have pissed me off but good and now I'm going to do what else I can. (I vote for seriously pro-choice peeps; luckily so do many others in this corner of Md. so I can't really write nasty letters to my elected officials. They end up being more like "Keep up the good work; don't let the bastards get you!" letters.

Interestingly, I just donated to NARAL before I posted this, because my frustrations with "dammit, why are we STILL having this discussion???!!" affect me the same way.

And yeah, I do vote, but I never expected Obama to be the Kwisatz Haderach of liberals, and this is more evidence...

Dammit, I'd heard that there wasn't an anti-choice amendment. Will have to go contemplate angry letters to people (that I'll probably never write). I like y'all's temporary solution of donating to groups that help fund ... stuff.
