Jul. 7th, 2002 09:53 pmI did go down to the Mall for the Folklife Festival today. Damn, that could have gone better....
It was great to see G. and A.A., but there were tons of people (eww!) and a lot of dust was kicked up - I am still coughing/sneezing it out even now. Part of the problem was my own fault - idjit me didn't realize that wearing sneaks without socks could be a Bad Thing when adding dust into the factor, and I damn well sanded my ankles off :(
After visiting the first aid station for bandages, G. did guide me over to the Tokyo Recycle Project, a group of artists/designers who strip down old clothes and re-make them into new things. Coat linings become skirts, multiple t-shirts are sewn into one, etc. Bricolage at it's best, and the photos at the site really do not do their work justice. (Similar stripped down t-shirts are made by Trash-a-Porter, but even these are not as innovative, IMHO). Seeing this exhibit was an extremely bright spot in my afternoon - gives me ideas of things to do in the winter when I'm locked in and don't want to go out for art supplies - look at what I've already got and how it can be remade!
I went home and washed my torn up feet, read and took a nap. Napping is one of the rare luxuries of life - why did I fight having to take them when I was a kid? Now I'm trying to catch back up on serious lost naptime.
Less than 2 weeks to LA and Costume College (I leave the 18th) and I am getting a bit nervous. Even when travel is all planned out I'm always convinced I'll forget something or something else will go wrong. Must remember to take huge whomping doses of vitamin C for the flight, so I won't get sick on the way there or back.
