In no particular order...

  • Faire seems to me like "Halloween for adults" in a way that sci fi/costume cons and the like don't - perhaps because Renn faire is more widely known/open to "the masses" than the comparatively narrow-interest-focused con scene.

  • I used to get irked by the lack of historical accuracy in the costuming of players and patrons alike, until I got it through my snobbish skull that that's not what faire is for. Now I just love to people watch and see what people come up with.

  • So very many pretty people....

  • The performance aspect - of both the performers and the "playtrons" - fascinates me, perhaps because I'm so emphatically Not A Performer. Some people really seem to thrive on the attention.

  • I was told as a teen that "faire people" were a breed apart, my breathless friends passing along rumors of drug fueled madness after hours (like they'd know :P) As an adult I think it's more likely that they're like me and the guy still in garb I saw in line at the grocery yesterday after I got home - having a few hours of fun and then getting on with their daily business. And for people working the faire, it IS business - they work really hard.

  • Would love to have an 18+ or other adults day at faire so the performers don't have to water down their lyrics :P

  • Still astonished there's such a nice, permanent site for an event that only happens ~8 weekends a year.

I enjoyed my trip this past weekend with one of my other flisters and a bunch of her friends.

It was weird going with not exactly mundanes in the Greater DC fandom community (which includes bellydance, because, honestly, damn near every belly dancer I know is multiply geeky).

I was the only one in garb and I even changed. Sat. started out cool and damp and threatened rain all day. So I started out in Scottish. As it warmed, I changed into Turkish. I brought my wooden goblet and do the things I normally do and is normal for the peeps I usually go with but this was seen as cool and extraordinary.

I also had performers I had to say hey to. Two are dear friends (attended each others' weddings) and another I went to college with. My usual ren faire peeps know this same bunch (we all went to the same college) so it's weird to go with people who don't know great gobs of Ren Faire peeps.

I sat through two O'Danny Girls performances and can safely say, that I'd've much rather seen jousting or another couple of Rogues sets. I understand the humour of bawdy songs, I just prefer other types of music. And if Gypsophilia or really any other band playing belly dance music is playing I'm there for the dancing! I always pick off to the side so I'm not a huge distraction but I can't not dance! ;-p

I'd love to go again, maybe with a smaller group. I've got Sunday's open, maybe we can plan a trip?

"Multiply geeky" - I like that :)

Do you ever feel self-conscious if you're the only one in garb? I can't decide - on the one hand, I feel like I'm sticking out amongst my group of friends; on the other hand, I'm certainly not alone.

I might be game for another Sunday afternoon - I fence most Sunday mornings and I think a whole day outdoors and my allergies would just about wipe me out!

I'd like to catch a Rogues set - I got fragments, but there were other things to see, and I figured I'd have another chance this year. They're good to dance to - big stompy beats!

I also enjoyed Gypsophilia, what I saw - the fiddling is lovely.

Meant to get back to this sooner!

A Sunday afternoon would be great! I'm good for a bout 4 hrs. at the Faire so afternoons are excellent!

No, I don't feel weird to be the only one in garb but then I've always dressed a touch or two past norm. At the Faire, I may not blend with the peeps I'm with but blend with the general feel.

My favorite trip to the Faire was a day it was just the kidlet and I and she was 3 or 4 and all she wanted to do was follow the Rogues. We heard 3-4 of their sets!

So, when you're up for a trip, let me know!

I can't imagine what goes into it - even reading your posts about getting your booth and wares ready for faire season I'm sure only gives me a tiny glimpse of the effort involved. Hats off to you!
