...and we get to decide what that means....

I'm deciding that it means I need a cleaner house.

Ever wonder why you've never been over (or not been over recently, if you have actually visited)? It's because I'm a lousy housekeeper.

Let me explain: it's never been to the point that it's unsafe to use the kitchen or bathrooms, but the dust is building up and the clutter is.. well, not completely out of hand, but certainly not attractive either.

There is cat hair on everything. Little incentive to clean it up, as the Feline Americans spend more time in the house than D. and I do.

I've tried to keep on top of it, but dusting makes me itch and vacuuming isn't much better. D. will occasionally go on a furious cleaning binge, but not often enough. That, and I don't think either of us will go to our graves wishing we'd done more housework :P

But this is the worst round of allergies I've ever had in my life, and the buildup of lint, dander, pollen and dust mites are in no small part responsible. It's affecting my health.

D. and I are going to get a monthly cleaning service to reboot the house and because the pros will do this better than we can. Still, [hand on heart, pinky swear] I'm going to try and keep up in between times so I don't endure more headaches and scratchy throats than I have to.

I hate to clean house. Between the fumes from some of the cleaners and the dust allergies a day of cleaning takes me about a day to recover from. I itch all over and I sneeze and my nose runs. It's horrid.

But I do it because every so often people come by or it just bugs the snot out of me. I get tired of the clutter. I'm at about that stage now. There's crap everywhere and it's driving me batty.

I'll probably spend some time tomorrow and Fri. cleaning. Oh Joy. oh rapture. O_o

Good luck! I hope you don't get too allergic whilst cleaning up the stuff you're allergic to.

Reading the thread on this post, I'm guessing MOST people hate housecleaning. Unfortunately it's something we've all got to do, at least a little bit. I'm hiring the pros to try and divest myself of at least the most allergy-aggravating portions.

You and I must be cut from the same cloth. I am a sad excuse for a housekeeper.

But... getting a HEPA bagless vacuum cleaner was one of the best investments we ever made. Sucks the voluminous amount of cat hair and dander, etc. up and there is nothing blown back out through the filter. It has helped my cat and dust allergies immensely!!

The same perhaps, but it's not a small piece of cloth. Like me I reckon you have better things to do than keep house!

But I must agree - HEPA filters ROCK!

Let us know what you think of the cleaning service. We have the EXACT same issue and have considered it in the past.

I had always thought being a grown up meant you could do whatever you wanted. :(

I can so relate! I used to love to clean house when I was a housewife but now that I work outside the home, I have to be in the mood to clean house and haven't been in quite some time. I fear my house has become "shack nasty" and would hate for anyone to drop by unannounced.

"Shack nasty" is a wonderful turn of phrase! Mind if I borrow?

And yeah - if you work outside the home, doing the house work easily becomes a second, unwanted job!

Shack Nasty!

Please do borrow. I always thought it would make a great song that could be sung in almost any fashion from Country to Rap.

"Shack...Shack Nasty! She don't clean her house and you can tell by the way it smells! Shack, Shack Nasty! Don't want to sit a spell and have some tea, in this place I can hardly breathe!"

YES! Yes, this - you should absolutely write it!

I can hear it in my mind's ear performed by Mojo Nixon - a kind of anti-"Love Shack"!

We've had a monthly cleaning service for years now, and it has been a sanity saver!

Agreed that housework is the ICK! and it's a waste of perfectly good hobby/reading/viewing/other-fun-stuff time. Maybe if, while gritting your teeth and getting at it, you keep telling yourself that if you feel better you'll enjoy your funtime even more?

ah, I hear ya!
We are getting a cleaner to do the floor washing and vacuuming(bad back plays up when I do it), the dusting (allergy... I am paying for it this weekend after a big clean up).
we used to have a cleaner but she just decided not to turn up one day. Since then, my sinuses have been hell and my health has deteriorated again.
we have a new one coming next Thursday. HOpefully, she will agree to be regular
All hail my cleaner!
