Meanwhile, back in my sport fencing game:

I've developed the bad habit of always trying to wind up in the inside lines. My game has suffered because of the predictability, and because I end up doing stupid things (jabbing remises, breaking awkwardly at the wrist) to get there.

Work: confidently attacking into the outside lines without weird wrist wobblies and disengaging/other prep to set my opponent up so that they'll give me the outside line (because it's a smaller target, it's easier to protect/harder to get to).

Did some exercises today to improve my point control on the inside (Badger showed the optimum point so I won't bounce off - ribcage/underarm NOT shoulder) and fenced some bouts where finishing in 6 counted for 2 points. These really illuminated just how mindless my actions are. Time to kick that habit!

Ugh, I well remember struggling with that in my foil days. In epee, I generally reach my opponent's outside lines with binding actions off my parry 4 -- not sure how applicable that would be to foil. Nice thing about finishing to the outside line in foil is that it tends to be easier to draw wild parrying actions to protect the inside line, so that draws the blade out of line from protecting the outside line. I bet that learning to finish on the outside lines will be very helpful for you in fencing left handed opponents, since shoulder and flank of the weapon side are the best targets on an opposite-handed opponent.

Congratulations on your rapier authorization!!

Not sure how it would work in foil either. There have been very rare occasions when I've successfully used a bind, and I think it would technically be considered a malparry on my opponent's behalf - I just muscled through.

Yes, yes indeed :) Also because the inside is larger they have to parry further, which buys more time :)

And yeah, I'm definitely going to practice against the leftys!

Congratulations on your rapier authorization!!

Thanks!
