Recent discoveries, usually via D. who manages to find all the weird:

Glee - having little familiarity with musicals or singing, I'm surprised that this pulled me in as much as it has. Because the story revolves around a high school glee club, the spontaneous "breaking into song" doesn't seem contrived.

Admittedly I had to look at Wikipedia's episode guide to understand a lot of the references (I didn't recognize the songs and actors from "Wicked", for one), but there's enough other music for me to keep up. Not a huge fan of Beyonce ("if you want it you shoulda put a ring on it", really?) but as danced by football players it's catchy as hell (really, it makes sense in context):

Another is Community. It's premise is a group of reluctant community college students, and I think the selling point was supposed to be Chevy Chase. However the funniest characters have turned out to be Abed, the film student and Senor Chang, the outrageously cruel Spanish teacher. Lots of pop cultural shout outs, and the one where they all play painball to win priority registration invokes Terminator, The Warriors, and The Killer:

Truly crap video, regrettably.

Yeah, I know I should watch less TV...

Attn. Naughty knitters and other yarn sorts: [livejournal.com profile] vree has an icon for you.

[livejournal.com profile] ladyaelfwynn discusses fanfic as an expected and even transformative act after an overwrought author compared fanfic to someone stealing her husband(?!) Further linkage here, complete with long list of published works that could arguably qualify as fanfic. (Full disclaimer: I read part of one of the overwrought author's books. It was ok, I guess - I wasn't interested enough to finish and actually found the botany more interesting than the characters).

Off LJ:

Can You Update Pulp Science Fiction Without Being F-ed Up? - I certainly hope so because while the cheese is grand some of the stereotyping is jawdroppingly awful.

Tor Books blog is rereading Cherryh's Atevi series: Foreginer; Invader. Reading these to refresh my mind as I left off at #4 2 years ago and #11 (!) is just out.

They're also rewatching Firefly....

Much of today was spent in the kitchen.

First off, big Sunday breakfast because I fancied biscuits and gravy - the latter meaning bacon, and why not throw some eggs in there as well :P All turned out well, though the eggs would have been improved by applesauce.

Most of the afternoon was spent dyeing 36 yards of cotton twill tape purple to use as doublet trim - this counts as kitchen time as I did it stovetop with cheap/used pots/pans from my new favorite thrift store.

It turned out well - maybe too well, as it looks almost black - maybe lighter when it dries? At any rate it will provide enough contrast with the green linen of the doublet to have the desired effect.

Lastly I prepped for this slow cooker Moroccan lamb tagine. The spices smelled good; I'll find out tomorrow if it tastes to match.

Eating/waiting time was spent watching Laurie and Fry's Jeeves and Wooster with D. Jeeves is clearly an early member of The Company/Gentleman's Speculative Society ([livejournal.com profile] jlsjlsjls - Jeeves even has the broken nose! Incarnation of Alton Bell-Fairfax? :P). And Bertie Wooster is Batman, or should have been.

Still stuff to do...

My time being sick this week was not wasted. Between coughing and Nyquil naps, I watched the first 6 Star Trek movies (i.e., the ones with the tv show's original cast).

Disclaimer: while I was raised on Star Wars, I only have dim memories of the pre-TNG movies. I think I'd seen all of them before this week as I remembered bits from most, but they weren't ubiquitous in my childhood home the way the Star Wars trilogy was. As such I'm not super-aware of the context in which they were released, though I'm sure for fans of the TV show the first one was a huge, huge deal. Having said this:

this got rather long - only for the nerdy )

I still like Star Wars best. Yes, even after the prequels: the story seems tighter and has more of a definite trajectory, and I think they also had more budget/effects magic to realize Lucas' vision (even before all of the recent remastering/meddling). Yes, I do realize that Trek was coming out of episodic tv. That, and I grew up with the characters - for me there was never a time that there WASN'T Star Wars.

Still, Trek does have a lot of fun in it's little 'verse galaxy quadrant :)

Well, yeah
