Recent discoveries, usually via D. who manages to find all the weird:
Glee - having little familiarity with musicals or singing, I'm surprised that this pulled me in as much as it has. Because the story revolves around a high school glee club, the spontaneous "breaking into song" doesn't seem contrived.
Admittedly I had to look at Wikipedia's episode guide to understand a lot of the references (I didn't recognize the songs and actors from "Wicked", for one), but there's enough other music for me to keep up. Not a huge fan of Beyonce ("if you want it you shoulda put a ring on it",
really?) but as danced by football players it's catchy as hell (really, it makes sense in context):
Another is
Community. It's premise is a group of reluctant community college students, and I think the selling point was supposed to be Chevy Chase. However the funniest characters have turned out to be Abed, the film student and Senor Chang, the outrageously cruel Spanish teacher. Lots of pop cultural shout outs, and the one where they all play painball to win priority registration invokes Terminator, The Warriors, and The Killer:
Truly crap video, regrettably.
Yeah, I know I should watch less TV...
