some thoughts on the election
Oct. 29th, 2008 06:09 pmI've been watching the buildup to this election and I'm getting the impression I'm not the only one who sees it as a historic event.
Apart from blog enthusing that this is the "most important election in our lifetimes", I am talking to friends and family who are paying attention and getting involved: one of my fencing buddies who practically lives on the strip is planning on skipping class to watch the returns; a co worker is taking the day off to help get out the vote by calling and driving to polling places.
Maybe I just run in more socially conscious circles than in the past, but I don't think that's it. Democrats in particular are angry about how far the country has gone down the neo-con hole (and I'm inclined to agree with them) and even if history proves (somehow) that Dubya & Co. aren't actually evil incarnate it doesn't matter - it is believed that they are, and that's motivating.
Personally, I think it's a good thing that more people seem to care more, and are aware that they are watching history in the making - that's true of every election but given the economic nosedive, an unwinnable, inadvised war and encouragement by the powers that be to be in constant fear, this one feels so much more urgent
