something old, something new
Aug. 16th, 2008 10:36 pmToday was a final-esque push to get rid of as many "stealing shelf space" books/videos as I could in one day. To these ends I went on a serious used book/record shop pilgrimage.
I love used book stores! So much better than the big boxes because everything is a surprise and they have that wonderful, musty, lived in smell. It always reminds me of some of the happiest days of my childhood, when my dad would take my sister and I down to his favorite used store in Atlanta to trade his old paperbacks for new. Ah....
Same with used record stores. I found a fantastic browsing shop barely around the corner from where I live, and I'll definitely go back even though I'm so out of touch I'm paralyzed by the sheer choice.
I wasn't able to trade everything, but the record (yes! vinyl!) store took most of the DVDs and a few of the VHS. The two book stores took surprisingly (?) little, though one happily took a bunch of old books on tape that I'd been trying unsuccessfully to Ebay for years. I think that's where today's leftovers are going, or at least I'll try (anyone like The Teaching Company?).
I was good - I got store credits but didn't use them all :P One thing each place: Orbital's last album (4 years late - told you I was out of the loop :P), Florentine vampire novel and a history of Spain's Golden Age.
All the walking back and forth and loading/unloading the car was more of a workout than I expected and I'm crashing pretty hard.

Date: 2008-08-18 12:40 pm (UTC)Seconded!
I'm not spoiled when it comes to local books shops. We got one (1), and it's very mainstream. Uptight even, upper-classy and with very clear attitude towards what is "good taste". Though I have to say in their defense these last couple of years several younger clerks have been employed and they are much more open minded.
Before them, Neil Gaiman was regarded as v.e.r.y. underground, peculiar and nothing they could be expected to have on their shelves.
Fortunately we also got one (1) second hand book store. And they are good, they even took me up on my suggestion having a little shelf for erotica alone. This after the wife of the couple owning the store blushing had let me know she had a little something for me behind the back counter.
