English fitted gown - progress report
Jul. 26th, 2008 02:42 pmI've been diligently working away on this and am very pleased with the results so far. This one has some interesting design details, so I thought I'd include some pre-assembly pix as well:

This picture doesn't convey the richness of the texture or color of this fabric! It's machine-fulled wool, tan dyed over with burgundy resulting in a wonderful plum brown color. It's heavy but soft, and the fabric plus lining (tan cotton twill) holds the neckline up and away from the throat as it ought.

These odd looking things are the supports for the puffy sleeves - bulk alone won't hold the correct shape and I suspect the layers needed to do this with fabric alone would create bulky, uncomfortable arm holes anyway. The white channels (bias tape) hold bones (cut cable ties with surgical-taped ends) and this support will be covered over by a burgundy taffeta sleeve puff, which will itself be covered by these things:

These are the panes to decorate the sleeve. I have yet to assemble them but you can see the outside will be the brown wool of the rest of the gown, and the lining is the burgundy taffeta again.
Depending on final results I may guard the front opening and hem with velvet; I'm going to close it with hooks and eyes.
