Ah yes, the Jeremy Brett series ... supposed to be the best of the visual versions. And Holmes being antagonistic towards women is something that IS in the written version, so that's 100% kosher and canon (Watson being a bachelor is definitely TV-generated).
One o' these days I'll get 'round to viewing a episode or ten. In the meantime I have a tremendous urge to re-read my not-quite-complete-but-darned-close-to-it, original-Strand-Magazine-illustrations edition of Holmes. :-)
P.S. If you want to add to your to-read list, "A Study in Scarlet" is the tale in which Watson first meets a very strange gent named Holmes.
