SCA rapier
Jan. 28th, 2002 10:39 pmWent to the local fighter practice tonight - they usually don't have a rapier marshall available, but once a month a guy comes down from a neighboring region so I decided to check it out.
Interesting. I think the thing that is most jarring to me is the fact that you can use your free hand to deflect the blade - that is so very much against what I've learned in Olympic foil that it will take some getting used to. On the "up" side, the target area in modern foil = the kill area in period rapier, so I'm already in the habit of aiming for the best hits.
I may pursue this - most of my Olympic equipment will work for period practice; I can worry about getting sturdier gear if I ever decide to fence at events.
May add more detail to this entry later. Right now to bed - my eyes feel like they're about to fall out.
