At Metafilter I found the lovely link What's That Bug?, a repository to help you identify the crawly critters with whom you may unwillingly share your home. If it's not in the galleries, send 'em a pic and they'll try and identify it for you. Favorites (if you can call them that. Highlights, maybe?): camel crickets (had these in the basement of my childhood home - they easily jump several feet and are so leggy that they're just nasty. I always took the dog when I went down there because she liked chasing them) and the feline delicacy, the house centipede.

Given my aversion to bugs, I sure have an unhealthy interest in them...

Ugh! I hate those centipedes, they completely wig me out. And the cat is no help, he just stares at it

Ugh, the house centipede. I have some that like to live under my bathtub, so when I wake up in the morning they are there on the edge of my tub, greeting me hello, hello, hello, hello, hello...

I don't look forward to cleaning my apartment in four weeks when I return. The spiders will have, no doubt, decided they really do live there, not me. On the other hand, the What's That Bug page said that silverfish don't like cloves, and that's dandy! I'm happy to buy a huge box of cloves and sprinkle them behind my books. Nifty site!

I don't need to identify it--if it's a bug, I kill it!

a rousinding "wow! that's cool!" and "damn! that's disgusting!" at the same time.

at least now I know what the "kids" are hunting when they're not huntin small furry rodents.

I'm fortunate that mine like to hunt these, and Spice will eat the corpses. Even knowing they're not dangerous doesn't help me - they're just eerie!

Good thing you've got house centipedes then - according to the site they eat spiders!

And I'm told that penny royal oil and catnip repel roaches. Of course, the latter may attract hordes of ecstatic cats (but they'll kill the rest of the bugs)...

Bugs are one event in which I am, most regrettably, a girly-girl - either I scream for D. or the cats!

If I had to wait around for someone else to kill 'em, they would never get killed.

Yes... *hangs head* I'll have to be good to them now, even though they are frighteningly ugly, furry things. Eeep!
