heirarchy of nerdiness

I'm pretty sure the correct conjugation is I am eccentric, you are geeky, they are losers....

Remarkably incomplete, though - I mean, how do, say, SCA folk view their geekiness as related, to, say, Amateur Sci Fi artists who can't get breasts right? To read this chart you'd think they are of equal geekiness, but is that really so?

It gives me pause that everyone thinks they're better than furries. I mean, I don't get furrydom (furry-ness?), but I figure they're hurting no one, and are far less frightening than ~50 year old anime fans who don't [ahem] costume to body type....

Enough with this rating, I say! Geeks, embrace your geekiness! Write fanfic with a new fury! Game with greater passion! And one can never have too many replica swords (unless they take up space of operational swords)...

I think it's the sexual element of the furry lifestyle that squicks some people - I know it does me.

Hey, if it's among consenting adult furries, I have no problems. I might be squicked if a furry tried to jump on me or something, but then, I'd be squicked if anyone tried to jump on me without permission :P

Um.... Does it mean anything if I tell you that I fit into a whole bunch of those categories??????? Except the furries, thank doG!!!!

[identity profile] anotheranon.livejournal.com 2005-02-09 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I fit into a bunch of these as well! I think my geek level falls somewhere in the middle - not as far gone as furry anime Trekkies who write MaryJane slash, but hardcore sci-fi authors can still look down their noses at me :P

I don't think they count as furries if they're not making out - - :p

But the thought of erotic Rancor fic - - the mind boggles - - 8O

What about Logan and Creed... do they count as Furries? *innocent look*

[identity profile] anotheranon.livejournal.com 2005-02-11 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, they're both bears (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bear&r=f) :D

What? No slot for Science fiction literature fans who catalogue all their books using Library of Congress and then put them on a Web page? I'm hurt, I'm truly hurt ... :p

And, since reading your post made this song play over and over in my head, I feel it's only right to spread the joy. (Just be thankful I didn't post "Song Inside My Head" ... yes, I DO own a track with that title)

[identity profile] anotheranon.livejournal.com 2005-02-09 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't that place you with "literary sci-fi-fans" and the like? Fairly high up on the food chain!

LURVE the song!!

[identity profile] jlsjlsjls.livejournal.com 2005-02-09 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. Within my own profession, the act of cataloguing my personal collection makes me a geek. Putting on the Internet makes me a supergeek (according to a couple of the Calgary Public Library's cataloguers ***grin***) and I'm proud of it!

Glad the tune entertained. It's an Arrogant Worms song, titled "Great To Be A Nerd". :-)

[identity profile] madbodger.livejournal.com 2005-02-09 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Of course not! I catalogue my books with Delicious Library, a Bluetooth wireless laser barcode scanner, a Powerbook and a wireless internet connexion.

Well hello fellow cataloguing geek! D'you use Library of Congress or Dewey Decimal classification? My library is in a customized version of BookCat ... the only way it could make me happier would be if it used MARC21 coding. :-)

Are you telling me I wasted all the time I spent on my Steel Angel Kurumi kosupure outfit, just because I don't look anything like her?!?! Damn! I even made robot ears!

Still, in the interest of civic order I suppose I could go with my backup plan and wear the official peeping tom outfit, which is very simple and pretty much a one size fits all deal. And if that's no good I can just ditch it all and go as a cameko.

And as an anime fan who insists on subtitles, I'm pleased to see that the chart has me near the top! Woohoo!

personally I think I prefer "geeky" to "eccentric". at least in Swedish "eccentry" sounds awfully upper-class while "geeky" sounds more like I am quite good at something ;))

[identity profile] anotheranon.livejournal.com 2005-02-10 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not quite sure how one would compare "eccentric" and "geeky" in English. To me "eccentric" always sounded like someone who is a bit odd but mostly inoffensive, where "geek" is associated with computers, social ineptitude, and in worst cases, poor personal hygiene :/
