Went to do historical fencing today - it was only longswordsmen (and women) (lots of them) again! The few rapier people who showed left early. The saber coach wasn't even there - somehow we've been missing each other since around July.
Understand - there is nothing wrong with longsword, but I don't miss it when I've not done it for awhile. I crave the speed of saber and sheer muscle tension of rapier (those things are heavy!) Besides, I think I get a better workout with these weapons - today I didn't even break a sweat.
Also, I think my "lopsided fencer"-ness hurts my longsword game a bit. Making cuts from the right is all right, but cuts from the left causes a sharp pinch in my lower back. I need to start doing footwork on the left again. On the upside, the longsword coach showed me a spine-stretching exercise that might unlock my vertebrae and make them a little happier!
Also this past week at modern foil club I realized just how much I need the drills that a regular class provides - A. went through a defense exercise in septime with me and I noticed a great improvement in my parrying time and strategy for the rest of the evening!
More footwork/blade work at home (against LaFaye, my much-abused dress mold) would probably also help my plans to drop those extra 5 lbs....
I took some of my "large size" clothing out of storage and washed it so I can start wearing it again without fear of itchy dust mites. I've not tried them on yet and I half dread, half eagerly anticipate what I'll find - a couple of the dress pants I shrunk out of are rather nice :/
Mad hatting: started assembling the other hat pattern and madly chased down the raveling threads that fell off of it. Not sure how well a newsboy's cap is going to look in pinstripe, but at least it keeps my hands busy.
Televisual feasting: the 2nd half of Henry VIII was no better, no worse than the first - same poor history and sheer making things up. Much better has been Long Way Round, suggested by my mother and quite entertaining - travelogues with Ewan McGregor are both interesting, especially considering the locations (Eastern Europe, Uzbekistan, Siberia) AND funny!
Not sure what the week holds ahead. I hope to try and donate blood sometime during the holiday season (I've had several calls from the blood bank needing my type, and face it, it's one of the better gifts one can give) and maybe, just maybe, chill out a bit.
Plotting thanksgiving dinner - D. is doing the turkey; I have elected to do everything else. I know I want cornbread, some kind of potato dish, and some kind of pie(s?). D. and I both dislike cranberry sauce (especially in it's can-shaped incarnation) so we're giving that a miss.
