No, I've not been sitting on pins and needles all night, gnawing my nails down to the knuckle in paralyzing anxiety over these elections. I can't say I'm terribly surprised that this is going into recounts and contention - I expected that with so many states so close and turnout being what it was.

I'm not going to get my knickers in a twist over the president - yet. I'm going to save my energies for when more is known (though Bush's plan to declare victory today is yet another example of his and his administrations arrogance, IMHO). And I'm not too upset over my own state - predictably and solidly Democrat.

No, what's really disappointing me this morning is reading about the local ballot initiatives elsewhere: 11 out of 11 states voted solidly against gay marriage. Coburn, the freak who wants to kill abortion providers, won in Oklahoma (Oklahoma is now officially NOT OK, in my book).

In Kentucky, Bunning won, even though he refused to debate his opponent and accused him of being gay and looking like Saddam Hussein's sons, in turn (U.S. friends - please excuse all the linkage - a good number of my readership is from outside the country).

I'm enormously disappointed in the the red states for revealing themselves to be so small and narrow socially. I was naive - I really, really thought that most people didn't care about things like gay marriage and abortion when things like jobs and war are on the line, but .. dammit!

I mean, what's their beef? So gays can marry, so women can have abortions - no one's holding a gun to their heads to make them do either of these things, yet Repubs (note, not all Republicans - I have no idea who, if anyone, represents moderate Republicans anymore) are determined that not only will they not allow these things for themselves, but not for anyone else either!

Ok, I just ranted. I didn't plan to rant. But if most of the country outside of my liberal enclave is a sea of insult-flinging homophobic Bible-beaters, [livejournal.com profile] jlsjlsjls' futon is looking better all the time :(
