Just what is the story on the little winged buggers anyway? The way the 17-year infestation was described to me conjured images of the ground seething with bugs, and hordes of them flying through the air a la Hitchock's "The Birds", but I think I've seen a grand total of one at work (or rather, a picture of one allegedly from my workplace - no identifying landmarks, so it could have been anywhere :P) and nothing at home. My aunt a few miles south swears her yard is crawling with them. Perhaps it's that our complex has had various piping, paving, and other maintenance from time to time since 1987, but I'm beginning to wonder if this isn't a tall tale perpetrated on (relative) newcomers like myself :P

Not that I'm overly thrilled with the idea of hearing their screeching at all hours or with the idea that they might fly into my hair (ew, eww!!), but something this hyped should be more.. prevalent, you know?

For the enthusiastic amateur entymologist-types, a local hotel has a Cicada A-Buzz hotel package going on that includes cicada shaped chocolates and binoculars for watching them (if you're into hot cicada-on-cicada action, anyway. Personally it's not my thing, but to each their own).

Weekend activities included completing D.'s robe (complete with straps to maintain rolled up sleeves and inner ties to keep it wrapped over neatly), fencing (one saber bout - eek, I forgot everything! - and longsword drills), and the disappearing fish. Just finished a nice cherry-red pedicure so my feet are presentable to the world for the season :)
