I've kept myself busy but not harried this week - a triumph of moderation, believe me :)

I cut out D.'s robe... but didn't start sewing on it. Did lots of research on shiny hussar uniforms (more on that in a later post) but have kept my word and not laid scissor on fabric yet. This has given me time to read some of the fruits of my library trip slowly enough for it to sink in the first time (I am a chronic re-reader because I read too fast!)

This evening I've spent scanning in photos of a g o r g e o u s Austrian hussar's jacket (miles of silver braid!) and listening to D. sorting mp3s in the next room - he seems to have an unaccountable fascination with remixed Christmas carols this evening (Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong's "It's Cold Outside". With a lazy drum machine. It doesn't sound like it ought to work, but it does). Further discovery - Haircut 100's "Love Plus One" is the most invasive earworm ever!

From [livejournal.com profile] respect_otters because she says it lots better than I can: another good reason not to shop at Walmart (and a later post with even more). Now you know why I won't shop there (besides, Target is just cooler). I highly recommend the Respectful Otter feed in general - lots of thoughtful commentary in there.

Plans for the weekend: My teeth are rather on edge because I feel like I should be at the March for Women's Lives on Sunday, but I have prior plans. Honest, and for true, had I not already paid the registration fee for my class, I'd be on the Mall bright and early. I owe Planned Parenthood some serious cash/volunteer karma :/

What I AM doing this weekend is the 19th century dueling saber (see Upcoming Events). This is someone well-regarded from out west who evidently never gets out this way. I see bruises in my future ;)

"Christmas Remixed"? I have that, it's pretty good. He might enjoy the "Verve Remixed" CDs too.

I didn't know FT Walmart employees didn't get insurance as part of their pay. That's ludicrous.

Dude, we so need national health care. Why couldn't we pass that . . . oh yeah, because it was backed by Hillary.

Other than feeling an insane claustrophobia whenever I set foot in a Wal-Mart, this link just gave me further justification for avoiding it like the plague, despite the appeal of low prices.

There's something really, really wrong with their ethic.

Love the icon :)

Verve remixed? By who, I wonder? Thanks for the tip!

What disturbed me most (in addition to everything else) was the bit about locking their janitorial staff inside the store overnight - that seems to be begging for a redo of the Triangle Shirtwaist incident in the early 20th century (seamstresses locked in, fire breaks out, many die because they can't get out). One would think we'd progressed in a hundred years, but evidently not :(

BTW, I am trying to reply to your emails, but I'm getting some kind of data error (?) Not sure if it's your server or mine, but I'm not ignoring you!

We need SOMETHING in the way of national health care - good health benefits EVERYONE, but the powers that be seem too hung up on profits and the idea that the underemployed are too "lazy" to deserve decent health.... </rant>

I think you may have a very valid point about the "Hillary" factor - it might well be partisan politics that keeps the issue of national health care on the back burner. That, and to be fair, Hillary Clinton isn't a health care professional and may not have known what she was doing (IMHO her entire political career has been built on Bill's experience.. but that's another discussion)...

End early morning musing....

Oh yeah - I can still remember seeing pictures of that fire - where women were jumping to their deaths rather than being burned to death. Not related, but it's also what I thought of when I saw the people jumping out of the World Trade Center - choosing that way to die rather than being burned alive. What a horrific choice to have to make.
