anotheranon: (fencing)

I got out today to my historic fencing group, for the first time in nearly a month. Of course, this is the week that almost everyone else chose not to show, including the primary rapier guy - so, I decided to give German longsword a try.

Longsword a little more balanced than the other swordplay I do, if only because you use both hands to on the weapon (think the kind of two-handed swords used in "The Lord of the Rings" movies). It was interesting, while it's not something I want to pursue right now I won't rule it out for the future.

I also did some saber drills and learned more about the saber workshop coming up in late April - they're bringing in a coach from out west somewhere who is one of the more experienced dueling sabreurs in the country. I'm interested, but not committing myself, if only because I am not sure whether I'll be able to afford to go yet. Perhaps perhaps perhaps....

And before y'all think my love of swords and knives betrays a certain violent streak in my personality, I'll just say - well, duh! For better or worse, many - perhaps most - humans are latently violent creatures, with passion and tension just champing at the bit for expression - any expression. It's all in how you channel the aggression, and I figure martial arts - with or without weapons - are one of the healthier and more disciplined methods of working it out. No one gets hurt - or, at any rate, not in any permanent or dangerous ways, given the masks and padding and carefully measured use of the weapons. It's a Good Thing(TM).
