This is one of the more enjoyable and involving movies I've seen in a long time. I've not read the books (yet) but I can see why they are so popular if they are anything like the film. The story is fun and interesting - it doesn't "talk down" to kids at all. And there are so many layers to the plot.

All of this, and the movie looked EXCELLENT (yeah, I'm a sucker for serious visual outlay). I had read on one of my costume lists about how good the 16th-17th century costumes on the ghosts looked - "what Janet Arnold (the last word in 16th c. clothing) has been doing since she died". As near as I can tell, its true! And the movie overall had this wonderful, lived-in neo-Victorian shabby elegance to it.

And I imagine I'd find kids less annoying in general if more of them were as intelligent and disciplined Harry Potter et. al. Frankly its astounding to think of any human being under the age of 40 happily putting on a tie everyday, so British public school uniforms are enough to impress this slobby American.

Also subbed to one of my all-time favorite magazines today - i-D. I used to scrounge copies on the rare occasions I managed to find them. Now that I can afford to, I'm going to have it sent to my door every month.
