a little ray of sunshine

Attn: [livejournal.com profile] patgreene - not all Christians are as asinine as the ones comparing themselves to "blacks under apartheid":

(Chicago, Illinois) Nearly two dozen Chicago area priests in an open letter have denounced the Vatican's anti-gay rhetoric, calling it "vile and toxic...

"As priests and pastors we are speaking out to make clear that our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters are all members of God's family, brothers and sisters in the Lord Jesus and deserving of the same dignity and respect owed any human being," the letter stated.

Disclaimer: I'm not Catholic and never have been; as far as I'm concerned the Pope can go jump in a lake on this one. However, I'm always pleased to see when any religious tradition is bold enough to question dogma.

yeah, but..

Did you see Cardinal George's response to it. Basically he said that maybe they could find less inflammatory language, but that it was still important to be clear that they are trying to convert these people.

So, "we could have said it nicer but they're still wrong".

sigh.

Yes, I did see it. It seems that it's the Bishop of Chicago who holds this view, not the priests who signed the open letter. I still give those priests props for recognizing that the LBG individuals deserve respect, even if they can't get their boss to admit that.

Unfortunately, there are still a lot of intolerant people calling themselves Christians. I read recently that one supposed minister wants to put up a memorial on the site where Matthew Shepard was murdered, apparantly in celebration of his "descent into hell". This is the same charming soul who shouted "God hates Fags" at Matthew Shepard's grieving parents as they entered the church where his memorial service was being held. And you know what really bothers me about this? Not so much that this jerk actually thinks this way, but the fact that he has FOLLOWERS. One man feeling this way is creepy, but having followers? That's just scary.

Yep, it's that "Rev." Phelps and his group that are doing the Matthew Shepard memorial. I have no words to describe that thing; if a religion wants to disapprove of certain individuals, that is one thing - active hateful campaigning is unspeakable! A truly sick individual >:(

Thanks for the link. I am only checking LJ very sporadically, so I just saw it.
