god, save me from your followers

I couldn't make this shit up (stolen from Atrios' Eschaton):
"Why is this man in the White House? The majority of Americans did not vote for him. Why is he there? And I tell you this morning that he’s in the White House because God put him there for a time such as this.”

Note: I KNOW that not all Christians are Fundamentalists, and I know that the majority of this country considers these types of views nutty at best. No, what disturbs me is that these crazies have far more politial and social influence than their numbers warrant.

I'd also like to point out that in framing the current war in religious terms, he really is helping the terrorists. Just what we need, fundie vs. fundie playing Armageddon with the rest of the world!

This is EXACTLY why we need the seperation of Church and State. Jeez, 10 years ago I woulda had to take ORDERS from this yahoo! I've never been happier to be Honorably Discharged - -

oh boy! or Satan put the Bush-man into the white house ;)) from an European point of view, this could only happen in the US. here the state has been separated from the church for a decade at least and to be honest had very little impact on politics. nutcases like this one would not even make it to military service.

b.t.w. have they ever succeeded in killing off an oponent? like generals in Korea or Castro at Cuba or Bin Laden or Saddam Hussein? nope. this man has to be sloppy too...;))

Legally, there IS separation of church and state - I meant what I said about fundamentalists being in the minority. However, they are very organized and very noisy, and so get a lot of press and influence.

And yes, the distinct lack of Bin Laden or Sadaam Hussien (or at least their bodies) has not gone unnoticed :(

Bush-league demogoguery

Um...and he thinks statements like this will increase our desire to be Christians?

Go figure. Guys like him annoy me. Grr.

AAAAARGH!!!! *runs to try and find an armageddon-proof bunker with head in hands*

What I love is that these people don't even seem to READ the Bible. Did they miss that whole part about love and compassion and turning the other cheek? Did he read that bit about the guy who got nailed to a tree for saying we should be nice to each other? Methinks this army dude would have probably been there, dressed in his centurion outfit, flinging spears with religious zeal, happy in the knowledge that he was fighting the war on Judean Terrorism.

Sheesh.

These people read selective parts of the Bible, mostly Revelation. What astonishes me is that much as they extoll the virtues of Christian compassion and charity, some are so caught up in their belief that the End Is Near that they give absolutely no thought to the poor "heathens" who will, according to their beliefs, either convert and be Raptured, or left on earth to endure the Tribulation. More of that "screw you, I've got mine" mentality.

Google "dispensationalism" sometime, or read Antichrist Politics (http://archive.salon.com/politics/feature/2002/05/24/dispensational/), out of the Salon.com archives to see what I'm talking about. Like I said, I can't make this shit up!

No, what disturbs me is that these crazies have far more politial and social influence than their numbers warrant.

Many years ago, Patrick McManus wrote that the #1 reason hunters get lost is because the guy who talks loudest, takes charge and claims he knows which way north is, invariably has a brain smaller than that of a sage grouse. But everybody follows because he's the loudest ... and they get even more lost. Same principle for the fundamentalist (and other illogically righteous) movements, I sometimes suspect.

My couch folds out into a bed, should any of you want to flee north ;-)
